Something Nice, Something Different
I started Something Nice Night Market in February 2024 because I wanted to do more to support local small businesses, makers, and artists in Houston. At that time, all the popular Houston markets had prohibitively high table fees for vendors and were booked in a way that simply filled open spots instead of thoughtfully curating unique offerings between vendors. As a small business owner myself, I also hated vending at the super-packed markets that seemed overwhelming for both vendors and shoppers alike. I wanted to provide something more intimate for shoppers that featured just 5-6 vendors offering different goods on the patio of our favorite dive bar on the East Side, Lil Danny Speedo's Go Fly a Kite Lounge. The only table fees we ever charged were minimal (no more than $15, but often free), just to cover printing costs for the promotional posters and flyers. The only reason the market shut down was because I moved to Chicago, but I will never forget the memories and connections we made with the coolest creatives in Houston. I am endlessly proud of the community we fostered in this space and I miss it so much!
Highlights
- Posters and flyers: my favorite thing to do every month was to create the poster for each market! My wife and I collaborated, with her illustrating something unique EACH MONTH while I designed everything else around it for print. People would take photos of our posters and post them online, making us feel EXTREMELY COOL. We really found our people by hanging these in our favorite hangout spots around town, and it reinvigorated my passion for guerrilla marketing. Check out the slideshow to see our print creations!
- Something Nice Night Market Website: in the spirit of keeping this market as affordable as possible, I hand-coded the market's website and hosted it for free on Neocities. Vendors could apply through the website, browse previous markets, and visitors could see details about future markets.
- Something Nice Instagram: some of my proudest digital work is featured on this Instagram account! I was a meme machine creating promotional posts for our vendors that highlighted some of the coolest things about Houston. Every vendor got individual highlights of their offerings, and we saw a fantastic reception online that brought new vendors and shoppers to the market every month.
